Sigma Global Vision
There's a reason why SIGMA continues to insist on the very highest quality in its product manufacturing: our love of photography is second to none. We deeply appreciate the photographer's desire to record and express—the passion of the photographer. We understand the need to capture the moment that gives rise to a unique work of art. Our endless passion for photography spurs us on to the kind of technical innovation that raises picture quality and performance, and it keeps us looking for new ways to facilitate artistic expression.
Development Policy : Craftsmanship
A production system that delivers greater design freedom and higher product quality
At SIGMA, problems to be solved and improvements to be made in each manufacturing process are shared and discussed in our on-site decision-making system. This well-established and self-sustaining communication framework enables feedback to be passed up and down the production chain. Being a relatively small company, SIGMA applies strengths of flexibility and speed in manufacturing products of high quality and high added value. Amassing and sharing expertise in this way on a daily basis also enables us to maintain a positive feedback loop that promotes innovative product design, production efficiency, and productivity.
At our Aizu factory, integrated production embraces everything from molds to parts
SIGMA's ability to coordinate things smoothly on the spot is largely thanks to our unique, vertically integrated production system. Apart from a handful of processes, everything is done in house. This includes grinding lenses, molding plastic parts, painting, mounting substrates, assembly, manufacturing screws and other parts, and machining molds. All our interchangeable lenses, cameras and strobes are also produced at our Aizu factory with this integrated system. With production lines that can be flexibly realigned according to a meticulous production plan and easily accommodate high-mix small-lot production, the manufacturing that takes place at Aizu is SIGMA's greatest asset.
SIGMA: a significant market presence with a social conscience
The history of our Aizu factory, our sole production base, is also the history of SIGMA itself. From the moment we first conceived the idea of setting up a factory in Aizu, we have aimed to grow and develop as a member of the local community. We believe that when a company sets up a business base, it has an economic and cultural responsibility to the local community from that time onward. The global market may be the principal focus of our business, but our attention to responsibility begins at home.
Development Policy : Lens development / Requirements
Conditions / Easily meeting the requirements for outstanding lenses
It takes three things to make outstanding lenses. The first is fine design. The second is precise manufacturing. The third is inspection. SIGMA's new lens lines deliver at the highest level on all three counts. First, they are designed to embody concepts that radically redefine the relationship among the photograph, the lens, and the photographer. Second, they are manufactured in Japan with SIGMA's vertically integrated production system and the most advanced production technology. Third, they are verified using unique performance-evaluation metrics and techniques, developed from the ground up by SIGMA, ensuring the highest level of expressive performance.
Development Policy : Design
Enhancing lens performance, defining 3 categories
Having taken our lenses to a new level of performance, SIGMA has adopted a simple product identification strategy that makes it easy for the user to identify the kind of lens for which they are looking. Building on this idea, we've reorganized all our lenses into three product lines, each characterized by its own clearly defined concept. From now on, every new lens we develop will be assigned to one of these product lines. This new system is designed to make it easier for users to access the lenses they need.
Customization that lets the user do things their way
Based on these new product lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus . The focus limiter is also customizable for Sports lenses. Using special USB Dock, the user will be able to connect the lens to their PC, and, using easy-to-operate on-screen controls, fine-tune focus and adjust other parameters to suit their personal preferences.
“Made in Japan”
All SIGMA's manufacturing – right down to molds and parts – is carried out under an integrated production system, entirely in Japan. We are now one of the very few manufacturers whose products are solely "made in Japan". We like to think our products are somehow imbued with the essence of our homeland, blessed as it is with clean air and water, and focused, hard-working people. We pride ourselves on the authentic quality of SIGMA products, born of a marriage between highly attuned expertise and intelligent, advanced technology. Our sophisticated products have satisfied professionals and lovers of photography all over the world, because our manufacturing is based on genuine craftsmanship, underpinned by the passion and pride of our experts.
Development Policy : Inspection
Every SIGMA lens undergoes performance testing and evaluation using our own A1 proprietary system using the 46MP Foveon X3 direct image sensor
There are three requirements for outstanding lenses: fine design, precise manufacturing and inspection that ensures compliance with all specifications. SIGMA lenses are born of well-thought-out design concepts and sophisticated, advanced Japanese manufacturing technology: the final clincher is our lens performance evaluation. We used to measure lens performance using conventional sensors. However, we've now developed our own A1 proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. The lenses in our new lines will all be checked using this new system before they are shipped. Thanks to our new sensors, with their extremely high resolution, you can expect our high-performance lenses to be better than ever.
SIGMA's lenses are designed to project the photographer's personality and passion
Our lenses meet all the requirements in terms of optical performance, operability, toughness, durability and more. By honing their basic performance for extremely high-functionality, we have given them the ability to project highly subjective values and emotions, or in other words, to convey the photographer's own artistic preferences and passion. This is part of what makes SIGMA lenses so special. In our new lines, we'll go even farther in this direction, striving for perfection in our products. At SIGMA, meticulous design begins with the details.
